I’ve reached what is without a doubt the section of the course I was looking forward to the most: fashion media! It’s what brings fashion from the runways to the consumers. It focuses on how two of my passions — photography and social media, are used to catch the eye of those who are interested in fashion.
As a fashion blogger, I’m interested in writing, creating visuals, and engaging my readers. This section of the course really helped me to understand the important role fashion media plays in explaining brands to people. Without media, there is no one to tell the story of the fashion brand — and everyone loves a good story.
Social media has become such a huge part of our lives. We’re used to having endless amounts of content to consume with the click of a button, and of course this has changed how the media works. It’s vital for fashion media to keep up with the latest social media trends so they can keep their fans interested and wanting more. A year ago, who would have thought that Snapchat could be used for the same reason as a magazine — to promote a fashion brand. Teen Vogue used Snapchat to introduce the new cover of the June/July issue before any other media outlet or social channel saw it. Thinking outside the box can really help consumers to connect with a fashion media outlet.
There’s no question that the most important part of fashion media is the content. It’s important on digital platforms to think about what your audience is looking for. You need to satisfy but also surprise and delight. Not only do you need to worry about this for one platform, but for all of them as we are looking for something different on each one — on Twitter you might be looking for a quick news update, on Instagram you want to see a cool image, on Snapchat you want a behind the scenes peak, and so on. As a blogger, this is something I’m still trying to get my head around.
As always, I have a few tips that I’ve picked up as I’ve made my way through this section of the course:
- Know what your readers want
Understanding your audience is essential. Keep your content fresh, but don’t be afraid to repeat something that has worked well for you. Knowing what works for you is a crucial step in engaging your readers.
- Stick to your personal style
Whether working for a big fashion media outlet, or your personal blog it’s important that you stay true to your style/ the style of the outlet when you are creating content. Authenticity and consistence are two of the highly coveted keys to success.
- Be open-minded
In this age of technology, there’s a new and totally different social media channel appearing every week (and I love it!). Being open to these new platforms is important — you never know what will be the next big thing and if you want to be ahead of the game you need to be aware of what your readers are using to connect with people and brands.
- Understand your brandAs much as you have to show your personal style it is also important to bare in mind the brand identity that you are creating content for. Use the right language and create images that the brand can be proud of.
Four out of five courses down, and I can see the finish line. I’m so happy I decided to enroll in the course but I’m sad that it’s soon coming to an end. I’ve learned so much over the past eight weeks, I’ve met some truly inspiring people in my classes, and I’ve created a strong portfolio that I know will help me pursue my dreams of working in the fashion industry. I’m excited to start the last section of the course, which promises to help develop my fashion marketing and PR skills.
